    Where required, we blast-clean steel using iron silicate media to the specified preparation standard, including Sa 2.5 near-white metal. We then apply the compatible coating system in controlled stages according to the project specification and manufacturer’s requirements. Systems can support specified fire-resistance periods of 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes, depending on the steelwork, design requirements and approved tested system.

    Standalone intumescent painting is also available where steel has already been suitably prepared and the existing primer is compatible with the specified system.

    We begin with a site visit to inspect the structural steelwork, existing coatings, surface condition and working environment. Our team reviews access requirements, surrounding areas, programme constraints and the required fire-resistance period. Where available, we also examine the project drawings, steel schedule and coating specification to establish the correct preparation method, compatible coating system and practical delivery plan.

    Surface Preparation

    Before work begins, surrounding surfaces and equipment are carefully protected, with suitable containment measures introduced where required. The steelwork is cleaned to remove rust, mill scale, failing paint and contamination. Where specified, we shot blast using iron silicate media to achieve an Sa 2.5 near-white metal finish. A compatible primer is then applied promptly to protect the prepared steel and provide a suitable foundation for the intumescent system.

    Intumescent Painting

    The specified intumescent coating is applied using professional airless-spray equipment in a controlled sequence of layers. Application conditions and coating thicknesses are monitored to ensure the required system build is achieved across the steel sections. Once sufficiently cured, a compatible protective or decorative topcoat can be applied where specified, completing a durable passive fire-protection system designed for the project’s required fire-resistance period.

    What does intumescent paint do?

    When exposed to intense heat, intumescent paint expands to form an insulating char around the steel. This slows the rate at which the steel heats up, helping it retain its structural strength for the specified fire-resistance period.

    What fire-resistance periods can intumescent coatings provide?

    Intumescent systems are commonly specified for 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes of fire resistance. The correct product and coating thickness depend on the approved system, steel section, section factor, limiting steel temperature and project specification.

    Do you prepare the steel before applying the coating?

    Yes. Where required, we can shot blast the steel using iron silicate media to achieve the specified preparation standard, including Sa 2.5. We can then apply a compatible primer, intumescent coating and topcoat as one coordinated service.

    Can you apply intumescent paint over an existing primer?

    Potentially, but the existing primer must first be identified, inspected and confirmed as compatible with the specified intumescent system. If the surface or primer is unsuitable, additional preparation or complete removal may be required before application begins.

    How do you ensure the correct coating thickness is achieved?

    The intumescent coating is applied in controlled layers to build the required thickness. Wet and dry-film thickness measurements can be taken throughout the process and checked against the project specification and coating manufacturer’s requirements.
