Preparation & Cleanup
At Premier Blasting we pride ourselves on our industry-leading preparation and cleanup. Blasting is only as good as the preparation and cleanup around it. If the site isn’t properly protected, contained and cleaned down, you’re left with dust, damage and disruption – no matter how well the actual blasting was done. That’s why we put as much focus on how we set up and leave a project as we do on the finish itself, whether it’s a single room, a full façade or a commercial unit.
That starts with discussing the project with the customer and their individual requirements. Understanding the property and what needs to be protected. Planning access, protection and waste management properly, agreeing how areas will be zoned off and how the work will be phased around other trades or occupants. Clear method statements and realistic timeframes give you visibility over what’s happening on site, while our team keeps noise, dust and disruption under tight control.
To keep standards consistent on every job, we follow a fixed, four‑stage process from the moment we arrive to the final sweep‑up. Containment & protection, surface preparation, protection of delicate areas, fixtures & fittings and post‑blast clean‑down & handover are all built in, so you get a predictable result, minimal mess and a site that’s ready for the next phase of work.
Each stage is delivered methodically, using the right equipment, protective measures and on-site checks to keep everything controlled from start to finish. It’s a straightforward system, but it removes the guesswork and ensures every project runs cleanly, safely and to the specification you’re paying for.
The 4-Stage Process
Containment & Protection
We start by isolating the room or area we’re blasting, sealing it off as a controlled work zone. Dust and media are contained from the outset so nothing escapes into adjoining spaces.
Surface Preparation
Next, we lay heavy‑duty sheeting and protection boards where nesssesary, tape and seal the edges and set out safe access routes before any blasting starts. This protects the floor and enables a more efficient cleanup afterwards.
Protection Of Delicate Areas, Fixtures & Fittings
Glazing, polished surfaces and other delicate fixtures are carefully masked, boarded and sealed before any blasting begins. Windows, doors, metalwork and decorative details are treated as high‑risk items, given extra protection.
Post‑Blast Clean‑Down & Handover
Any spent media, dust and debris are thoroughly vacuumed, swept and bagged, and all waste is removed from site and disposed of correctly. Once the area is clean, surfaces are checked against the agreed specification and left ready for repointing, repair or coating.
Preparation & Cleanup FAQs
Does Sandblasting Make A Mess?
Sandblasting is naturally dusty at the point of impact, but we don’t let that mess spread. We isolate the area we’re working in, sheet and seal floors and fixtures, protect windows and other delicate items, then use extraction and industrial vacuums to control dust and spent media. When we leave, the work zone is cleaned down and the site is ready for the next phase, not left looking like a building site. We also provide soda blasting which is less messy than sandblasting.
How Do You Protect Floors And Carpets?
We lay heavy‑duty sheeting and protection boards over all floors, then tape and seal the edges so nothing gets underneath. Safe walkways are set out before we start, so we’re not dragging media through the property and the original floor finish is protected from start to finish.
How Do You Protect Windows And Glass?
Glazing is treated as high‑risk. We mask and tape all frames, then board or double‑sheet the glass so it’s fully shielded from ricochet and dust. The same approach is used on mirrors, polished worktops, appliances and any other delicate or high‑value items in the blasting zone. We also look to do more delicate soda blasting in areas close to windows and glass.
Do I Need To Empty The Room Before You Start?
We ask that you remove small, fragile and personal items so we can work efficiently. Larger furniture can either be moved out or repositioned and sheeted by our team, depending on access and what’s been agreed in advance. The clearer the room, the faster and cleaner the job.
What Happens To The Dust And Blasting Media?
All spent media, dust and debris are vacuumed, swept and bagged at the end of the job. We remove waste from site and dispose of it correctly, rather than leaving you to deal with piles of grit and dust.
How Much Dust Will Escape To The Rest Of The Property?
Our aim is to keep it all inside the controlled work zone. We seal doors, set up temporary polythene walls where needed and keep windows and vents covered during blasting. On a well‑sealed job you may see a light film of dust nearby, but not clouds of grit drifting through the building.
Can You Work In Occupied Homes And Businesses?
Yes. We phase the work, isolate specific rooms or areas and keep access routes as clear as possible. That means you can often continue using other parts of the property while we’re working, without feeling like the whole place has been taken over.
Do You Clean Up After Sandblasting?
Yes. Clean‑down and handover are part of the service, not an optional extra. We vacuum, sweep and bag all visible media and dust in the work area, remove our protection materials and leave the surfaces ready for repointing, repairs or coating.
How Long Does The Cleanup Take?
It depends on the size and complexity of the job, but cleanup is built into our programme rather than tacked on at the end. A typical room will be cleaned down the same day the blasting is finished; larger projects are cleaned in phases so areas can be handed back progressively.
What Preparation Do I Need To Do Before You Arrive?
It's helpful if you can clear loose items, take down anything precious from walls or shelves and make sure we have good access and parking for our equipment. If there’s anything you can’t move, tell us in advance and we’ll plan protection around it as part of our containment and cleanup process.

A Past Prep & Cleanup Example
On the project shown here, the brief wasn’t just to clean the surfaces – it was to leave the room usable straight afterwards. Before any blasting started, we cleared what we could, laid heavy‑duty sheeting and protection boards, taped and sealed edges, masked every bit of glazing and cabinetry and turned the space into a controlled work zone. That meant dust and media were kept exactly where we wanted them, not spread through the rest of the property.
Once the blasting was complete, we treated clean‑up as its own phase. Spent media was vacuumed and swept up methodically, sheeting was folded and removed without tipping dust back out, and sills, skirtings and sockets were wiped down before we left. It’s a good example of how we approach every project: careful protection at the start, thorough clean‑down at the end, and a space that’s ready for the next trade rather than a mess for you to sort out.
